Diploma of Distinction Ceremony

Monday, June 13

IHS Alumni Peter Kirsanow -- Class of '72 will be honored. Don't miss the June 13th, IHS Alumni Association Meeting. Join other alums on Monday at 7:00 pm, in the High School Media room, where the Diploma of Distinction will be awarded followed by refreshments and a general meeting! Pete KirsinowPeter N. Kirsanow, graduate of the Independence High School, class of 1972, will be honored. Currently, Peter is a partner with the law firm of Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff, working within its Labor & Employment Practice Group in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a black civil-rights commissioner and a member of the United States Commission on Civil Rights (a part-time appointment), serving his fourth consecutive 6-year term, to which he was reappointed to by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer in December 2019. He is the longest-serving member among the current commission. He was previously a member of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) from January 2006 to January 2008. President Bush appointed Kirsanow to the five-member NLRB in 2006 for two years, where he was involved with significant decisions including Oakwood Healthcare, Inc., Dana/Metaldyne and Oil Capital Sheet Metal, Inc. In 2008, Kirsanow returned to the Cleveland law firm of Benesch Friedlander Coplan & Aronoff LLP, where he is a partner with the firm's Labor & Employment Practice Group and a member of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee. He represents management in employment-related litigation, contract negations, NLRB proceedings and EEO matters. Kirsanow has written articles for National Review since 2003. Kirsanow testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the nominations of John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court, and at the confirmation hearing for Jeff Sessions' nomination for United States Attorney General. Class of 1972 Reunion

The Class of 1972 is having their 50 Year Class Reunion this year. On Friday, August 5, classmates will meet up at the Kiwanis Beer Garden at 7:00 p.m. to reminisce and get the reunion weekend started. Saturday morning a Golf Outing is planned at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course. The main event, a dinner/dance, will take place Saturday, August 6,at 6:30 p.m. at Briarwood Golf Club. We are informing our classmates about the Alumni Breakfast, Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m., and may see you there. Breakfast reservations are limited and tickets must be purchased in advance. It will be so nice to see our classmates again to celebrate our 50 year reunion.

Alumni Breakfast in the Park

The Alumni will be sponsoring "Breakfast in the Park", at Kiwanis Pavilion, Sunday, August 7, 2022, from 9:00am to 11:30am. This year's breakfast will be hosted and prepared by the Class of 1970. The menu includes waffles, sausage, danish, fresh fruit, juice and coffee. The cost is $10 for adults, $4 for kids under 12 years old. Tickets are limited and reservations are required. The Alumni Association meets the second Monday of the month, four times each year, in March, June, September and November.

We are always looking for memorabilia from your high school years. If you have rings, class photos, yearbooks from 1926 thru 1928, 1931 thru 1944, 1946 thru 1951, 1992 and 1994, or other related items you would like to donate to the Alumni Association, please email the Alumni Association at Alumni Association .

Current active members represent graduates from the Class of 1942 to 2022.

Annually, the Association Awards two $500.00 Graduating Senior Awards; Presents an Annual Gift to Independence High School from $500.00 to $1,500.00; Supports the Graduating Class Yearbook ($350.00); Recognizes one or more teaches as an "Educator of Excellence".

Our 2022 donation goal is $3,500.00

You do not have to be an IHS graduate to donate. Graduates, parents, friends and businesses are all welcome!
